What is a GMO?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism.  This refers to any plant, animal, or microorganism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques to make them resistant to pests, tolerant to herbicides, or more uniform.

How are GMO’s made?

A GMO is created by manually inserting new DNA into a plant or animal so it behaves in a way nature did not design.  This is often done to survive chemicals, pests, or increase yields.

What does Non GMO mean?

The seed came from traditional, naturally bred plants not created in a lab and no genes were added from bacteria, other plants or other species.

Does Non-GMO mean organic?

No it simply means it was not genetically modified or engineered.

Can GMO cause health problems?

GMO’s are created to survive higher herbicides and chemical byproducts.  Herbicide residues are shown to increase “leaky gut”, reduce nutrient absorption, and deplete beneficial bacteria in the gut. GMO corn and soy reduce mineral absorption, have a higher inflammatory load, and a higher estrogenic effect.  Many vets and nutrition experts are noticing livestock, pets, and horses improve when switched to a Non-GMO, soy free low-chemical feed.  Better digestion, better skin, better energy, better weight gain.

Can GMO be organic?

No under USDA organic regulations, GMO’s are strictly prohibited at every stage.

Organic always means non-GMO, but non-GMO doesn’t always mean organic.

Are GMO foods safe?

Regulators currently say GMO’s are safe but many people avoid them because of the chemical residues and soil-health impacts associated with how GMO crops are grown.

Foods with GMO?

Corn, Soybeans, canola, sugar beets, cottonseed oil, alfalfa.  Aterak uses certified organic alfalfa, and non-GMO beet pulp.  Aterak does not use corn and soybeans in their feeds moving into 2026. If it contains corn, soy, canola, cottonseed, sugar beets, or alfalfa — assume it may be GMO unless labeled Non-GMO or Organic.
