Horse Feed Questions & Answers

What horse feed is best for weight gain?

The best feed for weight gain is one that supports digestion first, not just calories.  Horses struggling to maintain weight often have underlying gut inflammation, metabolic imbalance, or poor nutrient absorption.  Feeds that work best include:

  • Beet pulp (highly digestible fiber)

  • Flax or chia (anti-inflammatory fats)

  • Alfalfa or alfalfa meal (high quality protein and calories)

  • Healthy oils (such as MCT or rice bran)

  • Low NSC, Non-GMO ingredients to reduce inflammation

Aterak’s metabolic-focused blends are designed around this principle: restore the gut, support the nervous system, and then layer in clean calories.  That’s how true weight gain happens - from the inside out.

Horse feed without soy?

Soy-free feed is becoming increasingly popular because soy can be inflammatory, high in phytoestrogens, and difficult for sensitive horses to digest. Great soy-free alternatives include:

  • Sunflower meal

  • Flax meal or whole flax seed

  • Alfalfa meal

  • Pea Protein

  • Non-GMO beet pulp or teff based blends

Aterak’s formulas are 100% soy free and non-GMO, giving horses a cleaner fuel source that supports hormones, metabolism, and gut health.

Horse Feed with beet pulp?

Beet pulp is one of the safest and most beneficial ingredients you can feed. It’s a highly digestible soluble fiber, meaning horses get cool calories without the metabolic spike of grains. Beet pulp based feeds work well for:

  • Weight gain

  • Senior horses

  • Horses with ulcers

  • Metabolically sensitive horses

  • Hard keepers needing slow-release energy

Look for beet pulp products that are non-GMO and molasses free for the cleanest option.  Many Aterak formulas use Non-GMO beet pulp as a primary base because it supports healthy fermentation, hydration, and nutrient absorption.
