Adaptive Grazing for Horses

Writer's picture: Allison LepantoAllison Lepanto

Adaptive grazing is a method of grazing that mimics nature.  Adaptive grazing focuses on being responsive to the land's needs, promoting sustainability, and improving long-term productivity for both the ecosystem and the farming operation. This includes rotational grazing, adjusting grazing pressures, adapting schedule and movement management according to the variable factors such as rainfall, temperature, daylight hours, animal head count, time of year and nutrition requirements. Adaptive grazing differs from rotational management as it does not operate on a set schedule.

Adaptive grazing management takes rotational grazing management to the next level.

For this management method to succeed the following items will need to be included:

  • mapping out paddocks

  • evaluating grass health

  • setting up portable fencing

  • knowing the goal rest period of each pasture

  • determining a sacrifice paddock ( or paddocks) for inclement weather

  • considering utilizing additional species for weed control and diversity such as goats

By applying these strategies, you'll be able to create a more sustainable, cost-effective, and healthy pasture management system for your horse farm, benefiting both your land and your horses in the long run.  If you would like assistance with any of the above methods, feel free to contact us and we will happily guide you to success.
